Asau Tai is a coastal village located in the northwest of Savai'i island, serving as the administrative center for the Vaisigano district in Samoa. The village is situated on a deep-water bay protected by a coral reef, which historically positioned it as a prime location for maritime trade. During the 1960s and 1970s, Asau was the heart of Samoa's timber industry, hosting a large-scale sawmill operated by the American company Potlatch, which exported wood globally. Since the decline of commercial logging, the community has shifted back to agriculture and artisanal fishing, although the port remains a strategic national asset. A recurring challenge for the village is the siltation of the harbor's entrance channel, which currently restricts access for larger international vessels. Despite this, Asau remains a vital hub for regional government services and education in northwest Savai'i. The surrounding landscape features rugged volcanic terrain and lush forests, contributing to the area's distinct ecological and cultural identity within the Samoan archipelago.
