Apolima Fortifications (Samoa)

Weather…

Apolima is the smallest inhabited island in Samoa, situated in the strait between Upolu and Savai'i. The island is the remnant of an extinct volcanic crater, with one side having collapsed into the sea to form a natural, highly defensible harbor. Due to its sheer cliffs and narrow entrance, Apolima historically served as an impregnable fortress for Samoan warriors. During the 19th-century tribal wars, the island was a strategic stronghold that could only be navigated safely with intimate local knowledge. Its fortifications relied primarily on the natural topography, augmented by man-made stone walls at accessible points. Today, only a small community resides in the single village located inside the crater basin. Apolima maintains an isolated and traditional way of life, protected by strict access regulations for outsiders. The island remains a symbol of the resilience and sovereignty of Samoan culture.
