Apolima Crater (Samoa)

Weather…

Apolima Crater constitutes the entire island of Apolima, the smallest inhabited island of Samoa, situated in the Apolima Strait between Savai'i and Upolu. The island is essentially the rim of an extinct volcanic crater that rises steeply from the ocean floor. Its unique topography features high, sheer cliffs on three sides, protecting a lush interior basin where the local village is situated. The only entrance to the crater is a narrow, navigable breach in the northern wall, which requires skilled seafaring to negotiate due to strong currents and swells. This natural fortification has historically provided a safe haven and a defensible position for its residents. The interior is characterized by fertile volcanic soil, supporting various crops and traditional Samoan agriculture. The island's isolation has preserved a unique ecosystem and a traditional way of life that remains deeply connected to the sea and the land.
