Ashton Lagoon (St. Vincent & Grenadines)

Weather…

Ashton Lagoon on Union Island is the largest mangrove and lagoon system in the Grenadines, representing a landmark achievement in ecological restoration. The area was severely impacted in the 1990s by a failed marina development project that blocked tidal flow, causing widespread death of corals and mangroves. Since 2007, extensive restoration efforts led by Sustainable Grenadines Inc. (SusGren) have successfully reopened causeways to restore water circulation and biodiversity. Today, the lagoon flourishes once again as a critical habitat for migratory birds and a vital nursery for various fish species and sea turtles. Visitors can explore the area via a network of wooden boardwalks and interpretive trails that showcase the different types of mangroves and their role in coastal protection. The lagoon is designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA), attracting ornithologists and nature lovers from around the world. Beyond its biological value, Ashton Lagoon serves as a center for community-led environmental education and sustainable tourism. Its recovery is a powerful symbol of hope, showing how dedicated conservation can reverse decades of environmental damage.
