Chindia Tower Târgoviște (Romania)

Weather…

The Chindia Tower (Turnul Chindiei) in Târgoviște is the city's most famous landmark and an iconic symbol of Romanian medieval military architecture. It was built in the 15th century during the second reign of Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș) to serve as a watchtower, defense post, and signal station for the Princely Court. Standing 27 meters tall with a diameter of 9 meters, the tower's cylindrical shape was designed for maximum structural stability and defense. The tower underwent several modifications over the centuries, with the most significant restoration occurring between 1847 and 1851 under Prince Gheorghe Bibescu, giving it its current Neo-Gothic appearance. The name 'Chindia' is thought to be derived from the Romanian word for 'dusk,' as it was from here that the signal to close the city gates and douse the fires was given each evening. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase to reach the top balcony, which gives a panoramic panoramic view of the ruins of the Princely Court and the surrounding city. Today, it houses a permanent exhibition documenting the history of the Wallachian princes who ruled from Târgoviște.
