Pietrosul Rodnei Peak (Romania)

Weather…

Pietrosul Rodnei, standing at 2,303 meters, is the highest peak of the Eastern Carpathians and the Rodna Mountains in Romania. It dominates the landscape above the town of Borșa and is part of a Biosphere Reserve of the same name recognized by UNESCO. The terrain is defined by dramatic glacial landforms, including the Iezer Cirque, which holds a lake whose shape strikingly resembles the map of Romania. Geologically, the mountain consists of crystalline schists, leading to rugged ridges and steep faces. Botanically, the area is of outstanding importance, as numerous arcto-alpine relict plants and rare species such as edelweiss thrive here. The fauna includes one of the most stable chamois populations in the region, as well as marmots and rare bird species. Historically, Pietrosul was a significant location for scientific research into Carpathian flora. The ascent is demanding but has expansive views reaching as far as Ukraine and across the entire Maramureș Basin.
