Bistrița Fortress Walls (Romania)

Weather…

The Bistrița Fortress was once one of the most formidable medieval defensive systems in Transylvania, built to protect the wealthy Saxon trading town. Construction of the enclosure walls began in the 15th century with the patronage of King Matthias Corvinus, following the increasing threat of Ottoman invasions. The fortification originally consisted of a nearly 1,500-meter-long wall, 18 towers and bastions, and several fortified gates, each maintained by the city's various merchant guilds. The most famous surviving element is the Coopers' Tower (Turnul Dogarilor), which remains largely intact today. Although most of the walls and gates were demolished in the 19th century to make way for urban growth, the remaining sections still convey the medieval grandeur of the site. These remnants surround the historical center, home to the iconic Evangelical Church, and define Bistrița's architectural identity as a former fortified Saxon stronghold.
