Stavropoleos Monastery (Romania)

Weather…

The Stavropoleos Church in Bucharest's Old Town is a masterpiece of the Brâncovenesc style and remains one of Romania's most beautiful and cherished Orthodox monuments. Built in 1724 by the Greek monk Ioanikie Stratonikeas, it was originally part of a larger monastery complex that included an inn for travelers. The architecture is celebrated for its intricate stone carvings, elegant columns decorated with floral motifs, and spirited Byzantine-style frescoes. A highlight of the visit is the peaceful inner courtyard, which houses 18th-century tombstones and architectural fragments rescued from destroyed churches. Stavropoleos is also home to a significant library containing over 8,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and the largest collection of Byzantine music books in Romania. Carefully restored in the early 20th century by the architect Ion Mincu, the church has survived earthquakes and modernization to remain a sanctuary of spirituality. Today, it is famous for its psaltic music choir and its role as a living museum of Romanian religious art.
