The Barzan Towers, also known as the Umm Salal Mohammed Fort Towers, are historical watchtowers located in the Umm Salal municipality, approximately 20 kilometers north of Doha. They were built in 1910 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani to protect the coastline from approaching vessels, particularly those from the Ottoman Empire. The name 'Barzan' means 'high place' in Arabic, emphasizing the towers' function as vantage points. The architecture is unique to Qatar as it combined defensive features with astronomical functions. The towers were used not only for military surveillance but also for moon sighting to determine the dates of Ramadan and other religious events. The masonry consists of traditional limestone and coral stone, plastered with a mixture of mud and gypsum. Standing 16 meters high, they offer a vast view across the desert to the Arabian Gulf. Extensive restorations were carried out in 2003 and 2014 to preserve the structural integrity of this important national monument.

Visiting
The Barzan Towers are a historic monument that can be viewed from the outside at any time. The interior is typically not open to the public, as it is an archaeological site.
Typical hours
Since the site is freely accessible, there are no fixed hours for exterior viewing. For interior visits, there is no regular schedule - inquire on-site or at the tourist information office.
Photography
Photography of the towers from the outside is allowed at any time and highly recommended. Inside the towers, photos are likely not permitted as it is a protected ruin.
Time needed
Allow about 15-20 minutes to view the exterior and take a few photos. If you also explore the surrounding area and information boards, 30 minutes will be plenty.
Combine with
The Barzan Towers are north of Doha and combine well with a trip to nearby Al Thakhira Beach. Katara Cultural Village is also about an hour away by car and makes a good addition.
Getting there
The towers are about 45 minutes north of Doha. The best way to reach them is by car or rental vehicle, as public transport is limited.
Insider tip
Visit the towers in the late afternoon when the light is best for photos. Bring plenty of water, as there is no shade in the area.
