Souq Waqif (Qatar)

Weather…

Souq Waqif is the oldest market in Doha, serving for centuries as a vital trading hub for Bedouins and locals to exchange wool, meat, and seasonal goods. The name 'Souq Waqif' translates to 'Standing Market,' referring to the merchants who stood in the shallow water of the Doha bay to sell their goods. Although much of the original market was damaged or modernized, a massive restoration project initiated in 2006 returned the area to its traditional Qatari appearance. The renovation used authentic materials such as limestone, wood, and mud-rendered walls, replacing modern storefronts with traditional designs. Today, the souq is a spirited labyrinth of alleys housing shops for spices, textiles, perfumes, and traditional handicrafts. It also features a dedicated Falcon Souq and a Falcon Hospital, reflecting the importance of falconry in Qatari culture. The area has become a center for social life, with numerous restaurants and galleries, while maintaining its function as a commercial marketplace.
