The Al Koot Fort, also known as the Doha Fort, is a significant historical military fortification situated in the heart of Qatar's capital. Built in 1927 during the reign of Sheikh Abdulla bin Jassim Al Thani, the structure originally served as a police station to protect the nearby Souq Waqif and was also utilized as a jail for local criminals. The architectural design follows a traditional square layout with four massive towers, three cylindrical and one rectangular, topped with battlements. In 1978, the fort underwent extensive restoration and was converted into a museum showcasing traditional Qatari handicrafts, including weaving, gypsum ornaments, and wooden items. Although it is no longer a primary museum, it remains a vital landmark illustrating early 20th-century military architecture in the Gulf region. Its massive white walls and distinctive towers provide a stark contrast to the modern skyscrapers of Doha, preserving the heritage of the city's pre-oil era.

Visiting
Al Koot Fort, also known as Doha Fort, is open to visitors and sits in the heart of the traditional Souq Waqif. It originally served as a police station and prison and can now be visited inside and out.

The fort is typically open daily from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with an afternoon break. Fridays may have different hours; best to check beforehand.
Photography
Photography is allowed inside the fort, but flash is prohibited in some exhibition rooms. The rooftop terrace has a good view over Souq Waqif - a great photo subject especially in the late afternoon.

A visit to the fort takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If you also explore the nearby Souq Waqif, plan for at least 2 hours total for the area.
