Valença Fortress
The Valença Fortress is situated on the banks of the Minho River and is one of the most prominent examples of Vauban-style fortification in Europe. The current structure was extensively developed during the 17th and 18th centuries to secure the northern border with Spain during the Restoration Wars. The fortress consists of two main enclosures connected by bridges, surrounded by massive star-shaped walls and deep defensive moats. Inside the ramparts lies a historic old town featuring narrow cobbled streets, ancient churches, and centuries-old manor houses. Its strategic location allowed for the absolute control of the river crossing to Tui on the Spanish side. The fortress withstood numerous sieges over the centuries and remained in active military use until the 20th century. Today, it is a major cultural landmark attracting visitors for its architecture.
