Cathedral of Tui (Spain)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Tui, officially known as Catedral de Santa María de Tuy, is located in the province of Pontevedra and stands as one of the most distinctive examples of a fortified cathedral on the Iberian Peninsula. Construction began in 1120 in the Romanesque style and was completed in the 13th century with Gothic elements, giving the building a unique transitional character. Its strategic location on a hill overlooking the Miño River, right on the border with Portugal, necessitated a defensive architecture with battlements and massive walls for protection against invasions. The Gothic main portal, one of the first of its kind in Spain, features detailed sculptures depicting biblical scenes. Inside, the cathedral houses a 13th-century cloister, which remains the only Gothic cloister preserved in a Galician cathedral. Today, the cathedral is a significant destination on the Camino de Santiago and serves as a cultural hub for the Diocese of Tui-Vigo.
