Valadares Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

The Castelo de Valadares is located in the parish of Valadares within the Monção district, high above the Minho River valley. The castle was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Afonso Henriques to secure the northern border against attacks from Galicia. Valadares received its town charter (Foral) in 1187, emphasizing its administrative and military importance. The ruins visible today mostly date from 14th-century modifications under King Dinis I. The fortress is characterized by its strategic location, which allowed for complete control over border crossings. Despite centuries of decay, parts of the curtain wall and the foundations of the keep have been preserved. The complex is a significant example of Romanesque-Gothic military architecture in northern Portugal and gives visitors deep insight into the defense strategies of the early Portuguese monarchy.
