Pousaflores Castle
Pousaflores Castle, also known as the Castle of Redinha, is located near Pombal in central Portugal. The fortification was an integral part of the defensive line along the Mondego River, which played a crucial role in protecting the territory from southern incursions during the Reconquista. The castle was likely built in the 12th century under the orders of the Knights Templar or local feudal lords to secure the fertile valley and transit routes. Today, the most prominent remaining features of the original structure are the square keep and sections of the outer walls. Its architecture is simple and functional, reflecting the urgent military needs of the era in this frontier region. In more recent times, the castle lost its strategic significance but remained an important symbol of local history. The ruins have been stabilized to allow for public access and historical study.
