Santa Luzia Sanctuary (Portugal)

Weather…

The Santa Luzia Sanctuary, officially the Temple-Monument of Santa Luzia, stands atop the mountain of the same name overlooking the city of Viana do Castelo. This monumental structure was built in Neo-Byzantine style with Romanesque and Gothic influences and is visible from afar. Construction began in 1904 following the plans of architect Miguel Ventura Terra and was only fully completed in 1959. Particularly impressive are the large rose windows, which are among the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, and the magnificent mosaics decorating the interior. From the temple's dome, visitors enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Lima River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding mountains. A funicular connects the city center of Viana do Castelo directly with the sanctuary. The architecture is reminiscent of the Sacré-Cœur in Paris and serves as a landmark of Northern Portugal.
