Church of São Francisco (Portugal)

Weather…

The Church of São Francisco in Porto is a prominent Gothic monument known worldwide for its extraordinary Baroque interior. Construction of the current building began in 1383 and was completed in 1425 under the patronage of King João I. While the exterior retains the austere character of mendicant Gothic architecture, 17th and 18th-century renovations transformed the interior into a golden masterpiece. It is estimated that over 300 kilograms of gold leaf were used to decorate the altars, columns, and ceilings with "talha dourada" (gilded woodcarvings). One of its most famous features is the "Tree of Jesse," a complex wood carving depicting the genealogy of Christ. The church also houses catacombs where members of the Franciscan order and wealthy families were buried. As part of the Historic Centre of Porto, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.
