St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow is one of the city's most iconic symbols and a prime example of Polish brick Gothic architecture. Built in the 14th century over the foundations of an earlier church, it dominates the Main Market Square with its two unequal towers. The taller tower, known as the Hejnał Tower, is famous for the hourly trumpet signal that breaks off abruptly, commemorating a heroic guard during a Tatar invasion. The most precious masterpiece inside is the monumental Veit Stoss altarpiece, created between 1477 and 1489, which is regarded as the largest Gothic altar in Europe. The basilica also impresses with its magnificent polychromy by Jan Matejko and spirited medieval stained-glass windows. For centuries, the church served as the primary place of worship for Krakow's burghers, reflecting the wealth and piety of the former Polish capital. Today, it remains not only a house of prayer but also a major destination for art enthusiasts worldwide.
