Sandomierz Basin (Poland)

Weather…

The Sandomierz Basin is an extensive, triangular lowland region in southeastern Poland, formed tectonically as a depression in the northern foreland of the Carpathian Mountains. The landscape is predominantly flat to gently undulating and is significantly defined by the broad, meandering river valleys of the Vistula (Wisła) and the San, along with their numerous tributaries. During the last Ice Ages, massive amounts of sand, clay, and gravel were deposited here, forming the present-day subsurface. These sandy soils are often covered by vast, dense pine forests, such as the historic Sandomierz Primeval Forest (Puszcza Sandomierska). Geologically, the basin conceals significant treasures beneath its surface: it harbors some of Poland's most important natural gas and sulfur deposits, the extraction of which heavily drove the region's industrial development in the 20th century.
