The Royal Castle in Warsaw is a national symbol of Poland, serving as a testament to the country's turbulent history and resilience. Originally built in the 14th century as a residence for the Dukes of Mazovia, it became the official seat of Polish monarchs after the capital was moved from Krakow to Warsaw in 1596. The castle reached its cultural peak under Stanislaus II Augustus in the 18th century, with the creation of splendid neoclassic interiors. During World War II, the structure was almost completely destroyed by German occupiers, intended to target the symbolic core of Polish sovereignty. In an unprecedented national effort, the castle was faithfully reconstructed between 1971 and 1984, incorporating many salvaged original fragments. Since 1980, the castle has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Warsaw Old Town. Today, it houses a museum with significant art collections, including paintings by Rembrandt and Canaletto, and remains a venue for state ceremonies.
