Ogrodzieniec Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Ogrodzieniec Castle is the most imposing ruin located on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. Established in the 14th century by King Casimir the Great, it stands on Janowski Hill, the highest elevation in the region. During the 16th century, the Boner family transformed the medieval stronghold into a grand Renaissance residence, often referred to as 'Little Wawel' due to its splendor. The castle is ingeniously integrated with the natural limestone rock formations, which function as both foundations and defensive barriers. Significant damage during the Swedish Deluge in the 17th century and subsequent fires led to the castle's eventual abandonment. Today, the ruins are a popular tourist destination, offering insights into historical military architecture and aristocratic life. Its dramatic silhouette recently gained international fame as a filming location for the Netflix series 'The Witcher'. The site also hosts medieval reenactments and cultural events throughout the summer season.
