Czersk Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Czersk Castle, the former seat of the Dukes of Masovia, stands prominently on a high escarpment overlooking the Vistula river valley south of Warsaw. The current brick fortress was constructed at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries by Duke Janusz I the Elder, replacing an earlier 11th-century timber stronghold. The site is famous for its three distinctive towers that have survived to this day: a square gate tower and two cylindrical bastions which functioned as a prison and an armory. For centuries, Czersk served as a major political and economic hub of Masovia, though its importance began to wane after the Vistula River shifted its course and the regional capital was moved to Warsaw. In the 16th century, Queen Bona Sforza significantly modernized the castle and established extensive orchards in the surrounding area, a legacy that continues in the region's agriculture. After being severely damaged during the Swedish invasion of 1656, the castle fell into ruin. Today, it remains one of Poland's most easy on the eye medieval sites, frequently hosting knight tournaments and historical festivals.
