Donsol
Donsol, a peaceful fishing town in Sorsogon province, rose to global fame as one of the few places where you can ethically swim with whale sharks (Butanding). Unlike other locations, the sharks here are not fed, and encounters happen as they follow their natural migration patterns. The interaction is strictly regulated by local eco-guides to ensure the animals are not disturbed, making it a favorite for responsible travelers. Beyond the whale sharks, Donsol gives a magical firefly-watching tour along the Ogod River at night, where thousands of fireflies illuminate the mangrove trees. During the day, visitors can enjoy the rustic charm of the town or take boat trips to nearby diving spots like the Manta Bowl. It remains a quiet, laid-back destination that prioritizes environmental conservation. The whale shark season typically runs from November to June, with peak sightings occurring between March and May. Donsol is accessible via a land trip from Legazpi City. The local Bicolano cuisine, known for its spicy flavors and use of coconut milk in dishes like 'Bicol Express,' is a highlight for any food lover visiting the region.
