The Ruins (Talisay) (Philippines)

Weather…

The Ruins in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, are the skeletal remains of a magnificent early 1900s mansion, often called the 'Taj Mahal of the Philippines.' Wealthy sugar baron Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson had it built in memory of his late wife, Maria Braga. The Italianate neo-classical mansion was set on fire by Filipino guerrillas during World War II to prevent Japanese forces from using it as a headquarters. What remains are the massive concrete walls, which have an exceptional smoothness and durability due to the admixture of egg whites in the cement. The ruins glow with a golden light, especially at sunset. Today, it is one of the country's most photographed landmarks and a symbol of eternal love and architectural splendor.
