Kalibo
Kalibo is far more than just a transit point for Boracay-bound travelers; it is an animated cultural hub and the proud capital of Aklan province. The city is famous for hosting the Ati-Atihan Festival every January, widely regarded as the 'Mother of All Philippine Festivals,' where participants paint their faces black and dance to thunderous drumbeats in honor of the Santo Niño. Kalibo is also the global center for Piña weaving, a meticulous process of creating exquisite cloth from pineapple fibers, traditionally used for the Philippines' national attire. Nature lovers should not miss the Bakhawan Eco-Park, a multi-award-winning mangrove reforestation project. A long wooden boardwalk winds through the lush forest, leading to a scenic lagoon where visitors can enjoy the tranquility and even sample 'tamilok,' a local woodworm delicacy. The city’s culinary scene is equally inviting, featuring Aklan's signature dishes like 'Binakol', chicken cooked in a bamboo tube with coconut water. With its own international airport, Kalibo is easily accessible from Manila and several Asian cities. While January is the peak month for festival-goers, the period from November to May is handy for exploring the surrounding natural sites. Kalibo has a unique blend of indigenous heritage, environmental conservation success, and warm Visayan hospitality that rewards those who stay and explore.
