Danjugan Island is a shining example of conservation and sustainable tourism in the Philippines. This 43-hectare island in Negros Occidental is managed by the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation. It is not a typical resort but a living classroom for ecology. The island features five diverse lagoons, limestone forests, and seven distinct ecosystems that provide a sanctuary for an incredible array of biodiversity. Visitors come here to snorkel or dive in protected waters where coral reefs are teeming with life. Kayaking in the tranquil lagoons and bird watching are other highlights; rare species like the White-bellied Sea Eagle can often be spotted here. There are no grand hotels, only eco-friendly accommodations powered by solar energy, enhancing the authentic back-to-nature experience. As the island is a protected reserve, visitor numbers are strictly limited, and prior booking is mandatory. Dining usually consists of simple, healthy local dishes prepared by the staff. Access is via a short boat ride from the town of Cauayan. The best time to visit is from January to June, when the weather is stable and sea conditions are handy for water-based activities.
