Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve (Peru)

Weather…

The Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve is a sprawling high-altitude sanctuary that protects the vital watersheds and wildlife of the Arequipa region. Situated at an average elevation of over 4,000 meters, this vast landscape is dominated by snow-capped volcanoes and shimmering salt lagoons. It was created primarily to protect the habitats of the vicuña, a graceful Andean camelid prized for its incredibly soft wool, which was once reserved only for Inca royalty. The reserve also provides a home to three species of Andean flamingos, which can often be seen wading in the shallow, mineral-rich waters of the Salinas lagoon. The harsh but beautiful environment is essential for the water supply of the city of Arequipa and surrounding agriculture. It is a place of profound silence and rugged Andean grandeur.
