Sabancaya Volcano (Peru)

Weather…

Sabancaya is an active stratovolcano in southern Peru, part of the Ampato-Sabancaya-Hualca Hualca volcanic complex in the Arequipa region. Rising to 5,967 meters, its name in Quechua translates to 'Tongue of Fire,' a fitting description for its persistent activity. After a long dormant period, it became active again in the late 1980s and has remained one of Peru's most unstable volcanoes. The current eruptive cycle started in November 2016, characterized by frequent explosive events that release significant amounts of ash and volcanic gases. These plumes often reach altitudes of 3,000 to 5,000 meters above the crater, impacting the livestock-dependent communities in the adjacent Colca Valley. The volcano is closely watched by the Volcano Observatory of the Southern Andes (OVI) using advanced seismic and thermal imaging techniques.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The volcano is located in the Arequipa region near the Colca Canyon. Due to its constant activity, direct climbing is almost always officially prohibited; observation takes place from a safe distance at various viewpoints within the canyon area.
📅
Best season
The Andean dry season from May to October provides the best conditions for a clear line of sight to the volcano and its impressive ash clouds. During the wet season (December to March), heavy clouds often obscure the peak and roads get muddy.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding environment is characterized by high alpine terrain, deeply incised valleys, and barren plateaus (Altiplano). The slopes of the volcano itself are extremely steep, heavily glaciated, and covered in fresh ash and loose scree.
🎒
What to bring
Because you will be at altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters, warm, windproof layered clothing is absolutely mandatory. A good pair of binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens are convenient for safely observing the ongoing eruptions from afar.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is readily available at designated viewing points (miradores) along the main roads leading to the Colca Canyon. Vehicle infrastructure is well-established at these tourist hubs but can be quite rudimentary once you leave the main routes.
⚠️
Safety
The most significant health risk is severe altitude sickness; proper prior acclimatization in Arequipa is essential. Never disregard or bypass the strict exclusion zones established by Peruvian authorities around the highly active, ash-spewing volcano.
⏱️
Time needed
Viewing the Sabancaya is typically integrated into a broader multi-day tour of the Colca Canyon. You should budget about an hour for photography stops at the designated viewpoints to wait for the volcano's typical, recurring ash eruptions.
