Misti is a prominent stratovolcano in southern Peru, situated only 17 kilometers from the center of Arequipa. Rising to an elevation of 5,822 meters, it features a near-well-suited symmetrical cone that defines the regional landscape. The volcano is primarily composed of andesite and dacite, and its previous eruptions provided the white volcanic stone known as sillar, used to construct Arequipa's colonial architecture. In 1998, archaeological excavations near the summit revealed Inca shrines and human sacrifices, underscoring its historical religious importance. While the last significant eruption occurred around 1440-1450, Misti remains active, with frequent seismic activity and steam emissions from its crater. Its proximity to a major urban area makes it one of Peru's most monitored volcanoes due to the potential hazard it poses to over a million residents.
