Misti Volcano (Peru)

Weather…

Misti is a prominent stratovolcano in southern Peru, situated only 17 kilometers from the center of Arequipa. Rising to an elevation of 5,822 meters, it features a near-well-suited symmetrical cone that defines the regional landscape. The volcano is primarily composed of andesite and dacite, and its previous eruptions provided the white volcanic stone known as sillar, used to construct Arequipa's colonial architecture. In 1998, archaeological excavations near the summit revealed Inca shrines and human sacrifices, underscoring its historical religious importance. While the last significant eruption occurred around 1440-1450, Misti remains active, with frequent seismic activity and steam emissions from its crater. Its proximity to a major urban area makes it one of Peru's most monitored volcanoes due to the potential hazard it poses to over a million residents.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Expeditions to this iconic volcano typically start from the city of Arequipa, where guided tours are easily arranged. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are generally used to transport climbers to the established base camp areas.
📅
Best season
The dry season, spanning from April to November, is generally the safest and most popular time for ascending the peak. Clearer skies typically provide better views and significantly lower the risks associated with bad weather.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The ascent generally features incredibly steep inclines composed of loose volcanic ash, making footing quite difficult. The final sections towards the snowy summit are typically physically exhausting due to the high altitude.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality trekking boots, layers of warm technical clothing, and specialized cold-weather sleeping bags are generally mandatory. Acclimatization gear, plenty of water, and sometimes crampons are typically essential.
🅿️
Parking
Personal parking at the base is generally not a concern, as climbers typically rely entirely on the organized transport from Arequipa. Vehicles are usually left securely at hotels or tour operator facilities within the city.
⚠️
Safety
Altitude sickness is generally the primary danger, making proper prior acclimatization in Arequipa absolutely vital. Ascending with a certified local guide is typically highly recommended to safely navigate the steep, loose ash.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard guided summit attempt generally requires two full days, including an overnight stay at a high-altitude base camp. Rapid one-day ascents are typically only suitable for extremely fit and fully acclimatized athletes.
