Cerro Campana (Panama)

Weather…

Cerro Campana is a mountain peak and part of the surrounding national park, Altos de Campana National Park, in western Panama. It was the first national park established in Panama in 1966. Geologically, the area is a result of the activity of the Barú Volcano. The park is home to diverse ecosystems, including humid tropical forests and cloud forests, which have extremely rich biodiversity. The park provides impressive views of the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal and the surrounding coastline. Numerous hiking trails cross the park, offering opportunities for bird watching and discovering rare plant species such as orchids and bromeliads. The area is a crucial watershed for the Panama Canal.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is easily accessed by car, located just off the Inter-American Highway roughly an hour's drive from Panama City. The main park road winds upwards, directly connecting visitors to the administrative offices and prime scenic viewpoints.
📅
Best season
The dry season from late December through April is highly recommended to enjoy clear panoramic views stretching to the Pacific Ocean. Visiting during the rainy months means contending with relentless rain, obscured views, and incredibly muddy trails.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The well-maintained trails weave through a rich, biodiverse cloud forest, featuring moderate ascents punctuated by wooden steps and roots. The high humidity keeps the environment perpetually damp, so the ground remains soft and slippery even in drier times.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking shoes with deep lugs are vital to handle the consistently slick clay and wet rocks found along the forest paths. Rain gear is necessary regardless of the season, and a light jacket is useful as temperatures drop significantly at this altitude.
🅿️
Parking
A dedicated parking area is conveniently situated near the ranger station and the main viewpoint at the top of the access road. This area is generally secure during operating hours, making it the great starting point for most loop trails.
⚠️
Safety
The perpetual dampness makes wooden boardwalks and natural roots extremely treacherous, so always proceed with measured steps. Stick strictly to the signposted routes, as the dense mist can quickly disorient those who wander off into the thick jungle.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend between two and four hours hiking the easily accessible loops and taking photographs from the memorable lookouts. Those interested in detailed birdwatching or attempting the longer, steeper trails to the peak should allocate a full day.
