Fort Davis (Panama)

Weather…

Fort Davis was a significant US military installation in the former Panama Canal Zone, strategically located near the Gatun Locks on the Atlantic side. Opened in 1919, the base was named after Major General George Whitefield Davis, the first military governor of the Canal Zone. The fort served as a garrison for infantry and artillery units, whose primary mission was the defense of the vital lock systems against sabotage and direct attacks. During World War II, the capacity of the base was massively expanded to strengthen canal protection in the face of global threats. Following the end of US presence in 1999, the grounds were repurposed into an industrial and residential area. Today, the former military site houses free trade zones and logistics centers that benefit from the proximity to the Port of Colón and the canal.
