The Monastery of the Temptation, or Deir al-Quruntal, is an architectural marvel clinging to the steep limestone cliffs overlooking the ancient city of Jericho. This Greek Orthodox monastery has been a site of spiritual significance since the 6th century, marking the location where, according to tradition, Jesus fasted for 40 days and resisted the devil's temptations. Much of the current structure dates back to 1895 and continues to be inhabited by monks. Visitors can reach the monastery via a steep hiking path or by a cable car from Jericho, which gives a unique perspective of the landscape. Inside, the monastery features small chapels and a cave revered as the spot where Jesus prayed. From its balconies, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the fertile Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and the distant mountains of Moab.

Visiting
The Greek Orthodox monastery on the Mount of Temptation clings to a steep cliff above Jericho. Visitors can see the cave-chapel and enjoy the striking view from the courtyard. The complex is partly accessible on foot, partly by cable car.
Typical hours
The monastery usually opens at 8 a.m. and closes in the late afternoon. It may be closed during midday and on feast days. Early arrival is advisable.

Photography is allowed without flash inside the chapel, and unrestricted in the courtyard and terrace. Please do not disturb the monks during prayers. Discretion is expected.
Time needed
A visit lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, including the cable car ride. The spiritual atmosphere and views invite lingering. Those hiking should add an extra hour.

Combine the visit with Jericho's Old City and the ruins of Hisham's Palace. The Jordan River baptismal site is also nearby. The trip can be paired with a desert drive.
Getting there
The cable car from Jericho is the most convenient option, usually running daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taxis drop you at the terminal. Hikers can take the steep path from the mountain base.
Insider tip
Early morning is best to avoid the heat. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. Modest clothing is expected as it is an active monastery.
