Byzantine Church of Jabalia (Palestinian Territories)

Weather…

The Byzantine Church of Jabalia in northern Gaza is an exceptional archaeological site dating back to the 5th century AD. Discovered by chance during road construction in 1997, the site is famous for its vast mosaic floors covering approximately 400 square meters. These intricate mosaics feature diverse depictions of local flora and fauna, exotic animals, hunting scenes, and geometric patterns, offering a unique window into the artistic and social life of the region during the Byzantine era. Notably, the artwork lacks religious figures, likely due to later iconoclastic influences. In 2022, the site underwent an extensive restoration led by UNESCO and international partners, which included the installation of a protective canopy to preserve the mosaics. The discovery of an adjacent monastic complex and Greek inscriptions further emphasizes the site's historical significance as a major religious hub on the ancient routes connecting Egypt and the Levant.
