Anthedon, located on the Mediterranean coast north of ancient Gaza, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region. As the first known seaport of Gaza, its history spans over two millennia, from the 8th century BC to the early Byzantine era. Excavations have revealed a sophisticated sequence of settlement layers, including Iron Age fortifications, Hellenistic residential blocks, and Roman public structures. The city's Greek name reflects the profound cultural influence that made it a key maritime trade hub connecting the Levant with the wider Mediterranean world. Today, much of the site remains partially buried under shifting sand dunes, which has both protected the fragile mud-brick and stone architecture from erosion and complicated modern preservation efforts.
