Rafah is a historic city of immense strategic importance, serving as the gateway between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Its history dates back several millennia to the Pharaonic era, when it was a key outpost on the Via Maris, the ancient coastal road connecting Egypt with Mesopotamia. In the 20th century, the city's identity was fundamentally altered by the 1982 border agreement following the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, which effectively split Rafah in two, separating families with a barbed-wire fence. The Rafah Border Crossing is today the primary exit point for Palestinians in Gaza to the outside world, bypassing Israeli-controlled territory. To the south lie the ruins of the Yasser Arafat International Airport, which operated briefly in the late 1990s as a symbol of Palestinian sovereignty before its destruction. The city remains a focal point of geopolitical developments, characterized by its resilient population and its role as a crucial hub for international aid and trade, despite the frequent periods of conflict that have shaped its contemporary landscape.
