Thumrait is a wilayat in the Dhofar province of southern Oman with about 25,000 inhabitants, located about 80 kilometers north of Salalah on the Najd plateau. The city was an important caravan station for centuries on the frankincense route, which transported Boswellia sacra resin from the Wadi Dawkah growing area across the desert to the north in the Mediterranean region. Wadi Dawkah, about 25 kilometers south, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site 'Land of Frankincense' since 2000. Thumrait is home to an important air base of the Royal Omani Air Force. During the Dhofar Rebellion (1965-1976) in the Sultanate of Oman, the base played a central role. The city is located at the gateway to the Rub' al Khali desert, the world's largest sand desert area with an area of about 650,000 square kilometers.
