Jalan Bani Bu Ali is a wilayat in the Ash Sharqiyah South region with about 65,000 inhabitants, located about 240 kilometers southeast of Muscat. The city is famous for the Al-Hamouda Mosque, an extraordinary 52-domed mud-brick mosque built in the 16th or 17th century, one of the architectural treasures of the Sultanate of Oman. The wilayat has numerous historical watchtowers and forts, including the Bani Bu Ali Fort. In 1820, the infamous Battle of Bani Bu Ali took place here between British troops and local fighters, which ended in a heavy defeat for the British. About 25 kilometers south is the Wahiba Sands, one of the most impressive desert areas on the Arabian Peninsula. The region also borders the pristine beaches near Ashm.
