Oyo, often referred to as New Oyo, is a historically significant city in Oyo State, Nigeria, founded in the 1830s. It was established following the collapse of Old Oyo (Katunga), the capital of the powerful Oyo Empire, which fell due to internal strife and Fulani invasions. Alaafin Atiba selected the current site to preserve the Yoruba political structure and cultural identity. The city's heart is the Aafin, or royal palace, the residence of the Alaafin, a traditional monarch who continues to hold immense ceremonial and moral authority today. Oyo is internationally renowned for its artisanal heritage, particularly its intricate leatherwork and the weaving of traditional Aso Oke fabrics. The city functions as a custodian of classical Yoruba culture, preserving religious practices, music, and dance forms. Geographically situated in a transition zone between forest and savanna, Oyo supports a robust agricultural economy, notably in tobacco cultivation and food processing.
