Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove (Nigeria)

Weather…

The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is an extensive forested area located on the outskirts of Osogbo city in Osun State, Nigeria. It is regarded as one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria and houses the shrine of the fertility goddess Osun, along with numerous other deities of the Yoruba pantheon. In 2005, the grove was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its exceptional cultural significance and the preservation of indigenous spiritual practices. The landscape is characterized by dense forests, the meandering Osun River, and monumental sculptures created starting in the 1950s by artist Susanne Wenger and local collaborators to safeguard traditional shrines. Every year in August, the Osun-Osogbo Festival takes place here, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists. The grove serves as a living symbol of Yoruba identity, maintaining centuries-old traditions and a rich biodiversity amidst modern urban expansion.
