Arochukwu Long Juju Shrine (Nigeria)

Weather…

The Arochukwu Long Juju Shrine, known as 'Ibini Ukpabi,' was a powerful oracle and a supreme religious center of the Aro people in present-day Abia State. Positioned within a deep ravine featuring caves and an underground river, it functioned as the highest judicial authority of the Aro Confederacy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the oracle’s influence spanned much of southeastern Nigeria, and it played a controversial role in the Transatlantic slave trade, as those found guilty were often secretly sold into slavery. Legend tells of the 'Temple of Judgment' where the river would turn red to signify the death of the accused, though this was frequently a manipulation to deceive the public while captives were led away. The shrine was significantly damaged during the British Aro Expedition of 1901-1902, aimed at dismantling Aro political dominance. Today, the shrine remains a national monument, attracting historians and tourists interested in the intricate pre-colonial legal and spiritual systems of the Igbo society.
