The Calabar Monkey Sanctuary, widely known as Drill Ranch, is a world-leading conservation project dedicated to protecting the critically endangered drill monkey and chimpanzee. Established in 1991 by Peter Jenkins and Liza Gadsby, it serves as a safe haven for animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. The project operates across two sites: a headquarters in Calabar and a rehabilitation center in the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, drills live in large natural enclosures within the native rainforest, allowing them to maintain social structures for potential future release. Drills are among Africa's rarest primates, found almost exclusively in the border regions of Nigeria and Cameroon. The ranch combines wildlife rehabilitation with community outreach and education to ensure long-term habitat protection.

Best season
The dry season from November to March is best, with primates more active and trails drier. The wet season from June to October often brings muddy paths and limited visibility; the dry season also provides better opportunities for photography and hiking.
Best time of day
Primates are most active at dawn and dusk, so plan visits for early morning or late afternoon. The midday heat often drives animals into shade, making sightings unlikely during the hot hours.
Etiquette
Keep a safe distance of at least ten meters from the primates and never feed them to avoid disturbing their natural behavior. Follow all sanctuary instructions and stay on designated paths to protect the animals and their habitat.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars is essential for detailed observation of primates high in the trees. Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear as trails are often muddy, and pack insect repellent and plenty of water.
Getting there
The sanctuary is located near Calabar city and can be reached by car or taxi. Hiring a local guide is recommended, as public transport in the region is limited.
What to expect
Seeing the primates is not guaranteed, as they roam freely in the forest and can hide well. Plan at least two to three hours of quiet waiting and observing the surroundings - patience is often rewarded.
