Yaté Old Village is a site of profound historical and cultural resonance located on the southeastern coast of New Caledonia. Originally a traditional Kanak fishing settlement, it became a focal point for early European contact and later, a cornerstone of the island's industrial journey. In 1928, the construction of the first Yaté Dam transformed the region into a source of hydroelectric power for the burgeoning nickel industry, forever changing the local landscape. Despite these industrial shifts, the old village has remained a bastion of Kanak heritage, where traditional thatched huts, or 'cases,' still dot the shoreline. The geography is striking, characterized by the wide mouth of the Yaté River and the animated red laterite soil that defines the Great South. Historically, the village also functioned as a key port for shipping nickel ore. Today, visitors are drawn to Yaté for its authentic tribal atmosphere and its role as a gateway to the remarkable wilderness of the Blue River Provincial Park. It is a place where ancestral traditions coexist with the remnants of industrial ambition, offering a unique perspective on the complex history of the South Pacific.
