💡 Tips
- The laterite (red dirt) roads in the deep south can become very slippery after rain; a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended.
- Be very aware of the large mining trucks that frequently operate in the broader Yaté and Goro area.
- Always politely ask for permission before taking photographs of people or homes in traditional Kanak villages.
- Mobile network coverage can be patchy outside the main mining zones and village centers.
- Explore the south during daylight hours, as the roads are often unlit and difficult to navigate at night.
🍽 Food
A traditional Kanak feast baked in an earth oven; you must order it 24 hours in advance at a tribal homestay.
Available seasonally; best enjoyed grilled at small, family-run coastal eateries.
Often caught by local fishermen and served simply pan-fried alongside fresh root vegetables.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for hand-carved traditional artwork sold directly within the villages.
Sometimes sold by locals at small wooden stands along the red dirt roads.
A peaceful coastal area nearby, first-rate for unwinding and relaxing.
Find a quiet spot along the riverbank for a relaxing break surrounded by nature.

Goro is a traditional Kanak village located at the southern tip of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia. The settlement remains deeply rooted in local tribal customs and is governed by a traditional chiefdom, yet it has become globally significant due to the Goro Nickel project, one of the largest nickel and cobalt mining operations on the planet. This massive industrial presence has reshaped the local economy and landscape, creating a unique juxtaposition between ancient traditions and modern technological scale. The region is famous for its striking red earth, a result of the high mineral content in the soil, which supports a variety of rare endemic plant species found nowhere else. Despite the industrial development, the natural beauty of the area remains accessible, particularly within the Great South Marine Park, part of the lagoons recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
