Bukalo is a significant village in Namibia's Zambezi Region, functioning as the traditional seat of the Masubia Kingdom. Situated approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Katima Mulilo, the settlement is a focal point for the cultural heritage of the eastern Zambezi strip. Bukalo is home to the Khuta, the traditional court and administrative center of the Masubia people, where vital cultural ceremonies such as the annual Bunya festival are held. Geographically, Bukalo is defined by the vast floodplains of the Zambezi and Chobe rivers, making the area susceptible to seasonal flooding while providing fertile soils for crop cultivation. The village's economy is primarily based on subsistence farming, fishing, and cattle rearing. In recent years, Bukalo has seen increased government-led development and was officially proclaimed a village in 2013. This status upgrade has brought infrastructure improvements, including expanded access to electricity, water, and modern administrative facilities, while maintaining its unique traditional character.
