Hinthada (formerly Henzada) lies on the western bank of the Irrawaddy in the Ayeyarwady Region, 158 kilometres northwest of Yangon, with around 153,000 inhabitants. The town is the rice-growing centre of the southern Irrawaddy Delta and one of the country's most important rice markets. During British Burma (1886-1948) Hinthada became the capital of the district of the same name and was linked by railway to Yangon. The region is frequently flooded during the monsoon season (May-October), when the Irrawaddy can rise several metres above its dry-season level. In May 2008 Cyclone Nargis did not strike the town directly, but the subsequent floods devastated large parts of the district. Hinthada is the birthplace of several prominent Burmese politicians and remains an important agricultural trading hub.
