Chaungtha

Chaungtha Beach is Myanmar's most spirited coastal destination, especially popular with local families from Yangon. Unlike the quieter, more secluded resorts of Ngapali or Ngwe Saung, Chaungtha buzzes with energy and local flavor. The name means 'pleasant stream', and the beach is famous for its down-to-earth, friendly atmosphere. Visitors can witness authentic Burmese beach culture firsthand, featuring sand-side picnics and numerous stalls selling local snacks and crafts. A favorite activity is taking a boat trip to the nearby 'White Sand Island' or 'Thepyay Island', where the water is clearer and the sand is finer than on the mainland. On the main beach, you can rent bicycles or inflatable tubes for some fun in the shallow waters. The seafood markets here are legendary; you can buy fresh catch directly from the boats and have it cooked to your liking at local stalls. It’s a place of social gathering where interaction with friendly locals is part of the charm. Getting there from Yangon takes about 5 to 6 hours by bus or private car through the lush delta region. As the closest major beach to Yangon, it gets very busy during weekends and public holidays. The best time to visit is from October to April when the weather is dry and pleasant. While the hot season in March and April is popular, the monsoon months of June to September bring heavy rain, which limits beach activities but provides lower prices.
