Maputo Central Railway Station, opened in 1910, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. The Beaux-Arts style building features a magnificent bronze dome added between 1913 and 1916, alongside elegant marble pillars and intricate wrought-iron lattice work. Designed by architects Alfredo Augusto de Lima, Mario Veiga, and Ferreira da Costa, it was built to represent the prestige of Lourenço Marques (modern Maputo). Beyond its logistical function for lines connecting to South Africa and Zimbabwe, the station now serves as a lively cultural hub housing a railway museum.
