Maputo Fortress (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Maputo Fortress, officially named Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, is one of the oldest and most significant historical structures in Mozambique's capital. Its origins date back to the late 18th century when it was established by the Portuguese to defend the Delagoa Bay from rival colonial interests. The current square structure, characterized by its imposing stone walls, largely results from a reconstruction completed in the late 19th century. Inside the fortress walls, there is a museum housing colonial-era artifacts and the remains of the legendary Gaza King Ngungunhane, who remains a powerful symbol of resistance against Portuguese rule. The courtyard is lined with historic cannons and bas-reliefs depicting major battles and colonial encounters. Today, the fortress serves as a vital cultural center, hosting regular exhibitions and events that reflect on Mozambique's complex and diverse historical journey.
