Iron House (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Casa de Ferro, or Iron House, is a remarkable architectural landmark located in the heart of Maputo, Mozambique. Designed in 1892 by the firm of the famous French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the structure was originally intended to serve as the residence for the Governor-General of the colony. It was prefabricated in Paris and then transported by sea to Lourenço Marques, where it was assembled on its current site. However, the governor never actually lived in the building because the iron walls proved to be impractical in the tropical climate of Mozambique, as they absorbed and retained intense heat during the day. Despite its lack of residential utility, the building remains a significant example of 19th-century industrial architecture and metal construction. Today, it serves as a museum and office for cultural heritage, housing various exhibitions that highlight the country's historical development. The exterior features intricate lattice work and large windows, reflecting the aesthetic of the Eiffel Tower.
