Bazaruto Island is the largest constituent of the Bazaruto Archipelago, located off the coast of Inhambane Province in Mozambique. Stretching roughly 31 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in width, it is characterized by massive shifting sand dunes that rise to elevations of 100 meters. The island has been part of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park since 1971, established to safeguard its diverse marine life, most notably the last viable population of dugongs in East Africa. The surrounding waters support over 2,000 species of fish and serve as critical nesting grounds for five species of sea turtles. Geographically, the island acts as a barrier between the open Indian Ocean and the protected coastal channels, fostering ecosystems of coral reefs and extensive seagrass beds. Historically, the archipelago was a significant hub for pearl diving and maritime trade between Arab merchants and later Portuguese explorers. Today, it remains a premier location for ecological tourism and marine conservation efforts.
